In July, 2008, Jared, a Young Guns baseball player from Barbourville, KY was in Manchester playing at a tournament hosted by the Clay County All-Stars.
The fun stopped abruptly, however, when one of Jared’s teammates swung the bat and accidentally hit him in the head. The 2 ½ inch gash across his forehead terrified parents, Jeff and Ann, who immediately sought emergency care from Memorial’s Emergency Department.
Jared and both parents were very upset at the time of the accident, and Jared especially was scared and unsure of what to expect. His mother, Ann, tells how the Memorial Emergency team just kept reassuring Jared that he was fine and that they were going to fix him right up. Telling him exactly what they were going to do before they did it, allowed Jared to remain somewhat calm throughout the process.
“Our very best experience at Memorial Hospital was the kindness showed to us. Everyone was very professional but also very personable. I feel like they treated Jared as if he were their child. Most kids would have something negative to say about a place where they experienced pain but Jared doesn’t feel that way about Memorial,” said Ann.
The good news for the family that day was the CT Scan which showed, other than the nasty cut on his head, Jared was going to be just fine.
This experience led Ann and Jeff to write a thank you note to Memorial Staff:
“We would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge and express our gratitude to the E.R. medical staff at Memorial Hospital…We will forever be grateful for the prompt attention, kindness and professionalism show to us during this terrifying time. Luckily our son is going to be fine, and we were able to leave Clay County with a few stitches, a story and fond memories of your hospital.”
