Community Outreach
Memorial's Community Outreach Department serves as a link between the community and the hospital in multiple facets. While bringing education and wellness promotion to the community, this department exemplifies the hospital’s mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ to those around us.
Our Community Outreach team provides services such as tobacco education, health screenings with the Mission in Motion mobile health unit, health fairs, the Live It Up! childhood obesity prevention program, smoking cessation classes and health education within community school classrooms.
Current Programs
Health Screenings
Manchester Memorial Hospital's Community Outreach team provides free health screenings to aid in wellness and prevention. Free screenings include blood glucose, body mass index, total cholesterol and blood pressure. These screenings can be held in convenient locations such as churches, businesses, parks and schools.
Health Fairs
We host an annual Spring Health Fair and an annual Fall Health Fair here at Memorial Hospital. Various health-related organizations are invited to share information with the public and the community is of great benefit from the free services provided by the participants. We also enjoy the opportunity to participate in community health fairs hosted by other organizations.
Tobacco Education
Our tobacco education campaign spans all ages. We reach the youth in our local elementary schools through a program called Tar Wars. This program provides 4th and 5th grade level students with the tools to make positive decisions regarding tobacco use. Our community outreach team is also available for tobacco education presentations for adults at businesses and churches.
Smoking Cessation
Cooper Clayton Smoking Cessation Classes are offered free to the public at Manchester Memorial Hospital on a regular basis. This 13-week program combines nicotine replacement therapy products (patches, gum or lozenges) with a supportive group setting and trained facilitators hosting the meetings.
Classroom Presentations
We are also able to provide classroom presentations to students within our community for various topics. Manchester Memorial Hospital staff are available to discuss diabetes, nutrition, tobacco and more.
Live It Up!
Live It Up! is a 12-week supervised program for students ages 10–16 years. Manchester Memorial Hospital Community Outreach Department developed this program to aide in the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity. Our areas of focus in Live It Up are as follows: nutrition education, behavior modification, cardiovascular exercise, self esteem enhancement and team building exercises.
