Our Hospitalist Team

What is a Hospitalist?

A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in caring for patients while they are in the hospital. The hospitalists at Memorial Hospital are board-certified in internal medicine, family medicine and/or other specialties. Hospitalists do not see patients outside the hospital so they are able to give their complete attention to their patients.

Who is on the Hospitalist Team?

In addition to physicians, the hospitalist team includes physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (APRNs).  They are available around-the-clock to provide care to patients in the hospital.

Who is cared for by a Hospitalist?

  • Patients of local physicians and medical groups who have decided to use the hospitalist service.
  • Patients who do not have a primary care physician.
  • Patients from outside southeast Kentucky who do not have a local primary care physician.
  • What are the advantages of being cared for by a Hospitalist?
  • Hospitalists work only in the hospital and are available, on-site, 24-hours-a-day.
  • Hospitalists are easily accessible in emergencies and when questions or concerns arise.
  • Hospitalists are very familiar with the hospital procedures and processes at Memorial. This allows them to function efficiently in ordering tests, consulting other specialists and adjusting treatments.
  • Knowing their hospitalized patients are under expert care, primary care physicians are able to spend more uninterrupted time caring for their office-based patients.

How does the Hospitalist work with my primary care physician?

  • When you are admitted to the hospital, your primary care physician is informed by the hospitalist of your condition. Your physician then transfers the management of care to the hospitalist team. Depending on the length of your stay, you may see more than one hospitalist.
  • While in the hospital, the hospitalist will supervise your care.
  • The hospitalist and primary care physician will communicate as needed throughout your hospital stay. Be sure to ask your physician about your planned discharge date.
  • The hospitalist will ensure a smooth transition back to your primary care physician once you leave the hospital.
  • If you do not have a primary care physician, our case management team will help refer you to one when you leave the hospital.
