February 5, 2009 brought five distinguished visitors to our facility. Our guests were here to survey our clinical laboratory for the College of American Pathologists Laboratory Accreditation.
The CAP Accreditation Program is an internationally recognized program and the only one of its kind that utilizes teams of practicing laboratory professionals as inspectors. Because they deal with lab issues on a daily basis, these inspectors are uniquely qualified to provide a thorough inspection that is specific for each section of the lab.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has granted the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program “deeming” authority. Having deemed authority means the requirements of CAP have been determined to be equivalent or more stringent than CMS’s regulatory requirements. The CAP accreditation is also recognized by the Joint Commission and can be used to meet many state certification requirements. The program is designed to go beyond regulatory compliance, it helps laboratories achieve the highest standards of excellence to positively impact patient care.
Over 83% of the top major teaching and large community hospitals choose CAP as their accrediting agency. Our laboratory is joining an exclusive group of over 6000 laboratories worldwide that have met these high standards of excellence.
Congratulations for a job ‘well done’ goes to our laboratory staff and the excellent leadership of Martha Smith. Martha has distinguished her department and her team as proud recipients of this new accreditation as they receive designation for achieving the highest standards in the industry and set Memorial Hospital apart as consistently providing a high level of service.
