Memorial’s Community Outreach Changes the Life of IGA Employee
The Community Outreach Department at Memorial Hospital began the “Shop Till You Drop… Pounds” campaign on October 1, 2007. “Shop Till You Drop” challenged community members to make healthy lifestyle changes by providing monthly health screenings, weight monitoring, and educational handouts on tobacco cessation, cardiovascular disease prevention, diabetes, nutrition, physical activity and stroke prevention.
Participants for the “Shop Till You Drop…Pounds” Biggest Loser contest signed up at the beginning of the campaign and were monitored monthly for weight loss, body fat percentages, and BMI (Body Mass Index) which is an indicator of an individual’s overall level of health.
The Shop Till You Drop program sponsored by Memorial Hospital and in part by a grant from Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky allowed Desmond Swafford, a 19 year old IGA employee to participate and win the “Biggest Loser” contest. In a 7 month period, Desmond lost 27. 5 pounds, lowered his BMI by 3.5 points and lowered his body fat percentage by 5.9%. Desmond is within two pounds of achieving his healthy weight goal.
“I am so excited to be able to accomplish this weight loss and I feel great about what I have done in just 7 months,” says Desmond.
Memorial Hospital is grateful to IGA for hosting the health screenings and to all volunteers who made healthy lifestyle changes possible for the 804 individuals who were screened.
