Helen Wilson, RN, BSN, MAOM, PHD, Vice President of Clinical Services, recently acquired her doctorate in Health Administration. Below is the information she shared with us about this accomplishment:
What is your current role at Memorial Hospital and what did you do before your service here?
I have been employed at Memorial as the VP for Clinical Services since November 2000. I relocated to Manchester from St. Helena Hospital in the Napa Valley of California. I served in nursing management/leadership positions with Adventist Health (West) at AH hospitals for over 20 years.
Why did you choose to complete a doctorate in addition to the degrees you already hold?
Obtaining a doctorate became an educational goal for me after I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. I selected Organizational Management for my masters, as I felt it provided a varied curriculum which would be advantageous in my current role. A doctorate in Health Administration provided an opportunity for additional coursework in many of the essential areas required for leadership in a healthcare facility.
What was one of the highlights of earning this degree?
My dissertation related to the increasing shortage of nurses available to care for the growing number of aging Baby Boomers. My research evaluated the Impact of Facility-Sponsored Advanced Degrees on Nursing Retention. The information I was able to obtain will encourage hospitals to provide facility-sponsored education for associates to become nurses and for nurses to receive advanced degrees.
How long did it take you to complete your doctorate?
I began the class work for my PhD on January 13, 2005, completing it April 28, 2009. I had two brief breaks in my studies during that time.
Tell us a little bit about your life outside of the hospital.
I am married to Lee Wilson, Director of Plant Services for Memorial. We share four children and love grand-parenting with the fifth grandchild due in December. I enjoy a variety of music including the opportunity to play the piano, organ and French horn for church and other activities.
